Why custom foil MOQ starts around 2,500 m
A custom design is not just "printing your picture". It requires: gravure cylinder preparation or digital setup, ink mixing to a matched recipe, line trial strips for color and release calibration, and a first-article inspection. That setup cost is fixed; spreading it over 500 m would make the per-meter price absurd. 2,500 m per design is the point where setup cost, ink batch consistency and price become sane — for both sides.
Library patterns are different: the cylinder exists, the recipe is proven, and the line runs the pattern regularly. That flexibility lets you mix designs.
Three ways to lower your first order
- Mix library patterns. Many factories allow combining 3–5 in-library designs in one shipment to reach a total MOQ — ideal for testing which grains sell in your market.
- Start from library, then customize the winner. Prove demand on a stock pattern, then spend setup cost customizing that one.
- Consolidate widths. Standard 640 mm and 1,280 mm widths run on stock tooling; exotic widths add setup and minimums.
Realistic lead times (from a real schedule, not a brochure)
| Order type | Sampling | Production | Door-to-door total* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Library pattern, stock width | 5–7 days (free) | 7–12 days | ~3–5 weeks sea freight EU/US |
| Custom design | Proof 3–4 days + samples 5–7 days | 10–15 days | ~4–6 weeks sea freight |
| Reorder of existing design | Not needed | 7–10 days | ~3–4 weeks |
*Sea freight from Ningbo/Shanghai. Air freight samples in 3–5 days; air for production rolls is possible but rarely economical for PET film weight.
Trade terms that actually matter for foil
- FOB Ningbo / Shanghai — the standard; you control freight. Most importers choose this.
- CIF — factory books the ship; simpler if you lack a forwarder.
- Packing matters: rolls on 1" or 3" cores, wrapped and cartoned; a 500 m × 640 mm roll is light but voluminous — ask for the packing list per carton to plan container space.
- Payment: T/T (30/70) is typical; LC for larger contracts; PayPal workable for sample-stage fees.
The one mistake that costs the most
Skipping the substrate proof to "save a week". If the release layer doesn't match your line speed and roller temperature, you discover it after 300 meters of scrap on your machine — far more expensive than a 5–7 day sample wait. Always run the free sample on a full production cycle before releasing the PO.
