PS picture frame moulding foil is the heat transfer layer that turns plain polystyrene moulding into oak, walnut, marble or brushed-metal profiles at a fraction of the cost of solid wood or real metal. If you buy moulding for photo frames, mirrors or gallery-wall programmes, the foil you choose decides whether the profile survives mitre cutting, handling and years on the wall.
At Zhejiang Wuxin Technology Co., Ltd. we have manufactured hot stamping and heat transfer foil since 2002. Today 14 production lines output roughly 34 million m² a year, and we have exported directly for 24 years — the issues below are ones we solve for frame moulding buyers every week.
What PS moulding demands from a foil
Polystyrene is a low-surface-energy, heat-sensitive plastic. That combination creates two non-negotiable requirements:
- A release layer and adhesive tuned for PS. A foil formulated for MDF or WPC will not transfer cleanly onto polystyrene. The adhesive must activate below the temperature that deforms the profile, and release must be complete — no ghosting, no residue in the bead.
- Coverage on shaped edges. Frame moulding is rarely flat. Skived edges, beads and curves need a construction that conforms under the silicone roller without thinning on the high points, where wear starts first.
This is why we ask for the substrate and the profile drawing before recommending a pattern or a construction. Matching foil to substrate — PS, PVC, ABS, MDF or WPC — is the single biggest factor in adhesion performance.
Pattern options that actually sell in frame moulding
Frame moulding is design-led, so pattern capability matters as much as technical performance. The library covers the finishes that dominate the category:
- Wood grain: oak, walnut, burl, woven and weathered looks — the classic range for photo frames and mirror moulding.
- Marble and stone: travertine and luxury-stone effects for high-end interior frames.
- Metallic: brushed, gold-leaf and iridescent-cracked finishes that mimic metal leafing without the cost.
All are produced as decorative constructions on PET carrier, 48–50 µm thick, in 640 mm and 1,280 mm widths (custom slitting available), wound 500–1,000 m per roll on 1/3-inch cores. Custom patterns can be developed from artwork or scanned veneer under our OEM/ODM service — send the design and we will confirm feasibility with our team.
Adhesion: why foil peels off PS moulding
Adhesion failure is the most common complaint we hear from moulding processors. Root causes, in order of frequency:
- Foil–substrate mismatch. A grade not formulated for PS looks fine coming off the machine and fails the tape test hours later.
- Contaminated profile surface. Dust, release agents, fingerprints or oil block the bond. Profiles should be clean and dry before stamping.
- Insufficient temperature, pressure or dwell. The adhesive never fully activates, so transfer is patchy and peels under stress.
- Excessive heat. The opposite failure: the release layer activates too aggressively or the PS surface degrades, causing blistering and dull spots.
The fix starts with the correct grade, then dialling in temperature, pressure and line speed in small steps. If you are troubleshooting a specific line, our engineering team can review your settings against the foil specification.
Common defects and the first check to make
| Defect | Most likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Patchy or incomplete transfer | Temperature too low, or surface contamination | Verify die temperature at the face; clean the profile |
| Foil lifts in tape test | Wrong grade for PS | Confirm a substrate-compatible grade |
| Blistering or bubbles | Temperature too high, or trapped air in a deep bead | Reduce temperature in 5 °C steps |
| Batch-to-batch colour difference | No lot-level colour control | Ask for the supplier's colour-control process and retained samples |
| Scratches after cutting and handling | Insufficient scratch-resistant topcoat | Specify a wear-resistant construction |
Batch colour consistency deserves a note: it is a manufacturing capability, not an accident. As an ISO 9001:2015 certified and TÜV Rheinland audited manufacturer (report MIC-ASR263450), we control colour at the printing stage and inspect every batch — which is how export buyers keep reordering the same reference numbers for decades. Our guide to batch colour control explains the tolerance to write into a PO.
What to check before ordering
- Substrate-specific grades for PS — not a "universal" foil.
- Pattern library depth and willingness to develop custom designs in-house.
- Certification and audit evidence: ISO 9001:2015, TÜV Rheinland report, export history.
- Capacity: 14 production lines and 34 million m² a year mean programme volumes are covered.
- Sampling and lead time: 5–7 days sampling, production within 15 working days under normal conditions.
- MOQ: 2,500 m per design from a direct factory; confirm for your width and pattern.
FAQ
It depends on profile geometry, machine type and foil construction. Recommended starting settings are supplied with each sample; confirm final parameters with our team.
Yes. Send a physical sample, Pantone reference or scanned veneer and the OEM/ODM team develops a custom pattern. Feasibility and sampling timelines vary by design — confirm with our team.
Yes — MDF, WPC doors and panels, PVC wall panels, SPC/LVT flooring and aluminium profiles sit alongside PS in the range.
Usually a grade formulated for another substrate, a contaminated profile, or insufficient dwell. A PS-specific adhesive tested by tape pull on your own profile is the only reliable proof.
Talk to a factory, not a middleman
Founded in 2002 in Yiwu, Zhejiang, Wuxin is a National High-Tech Enterprise with 47 employees, 16 patents and a provincial doctoral innovation station supporting foil R&D. Whether you need a stock oak grain for volume moulding or a custom metallic for a premium frame programme, send the drawing and we will come back with a grade and a sample.
